History
The director of Formation,
Viv Thomas,
has been involved in speaking, teaching and mentoring throughout the United Kingdom
and the world. In 1995 Viv went to Regent College in Vancouver for a time of sabbatical and study.
Out of this period much of the thought and feeling contained in Formation emerged. Talking with Jim Houston,
Eugene Peterson and his fellow students proved not only to be a privilege but also life changing for Viv.
During the year at Regent, and in later doctoral reflections at King’s University in London,
Viv interacted with professors and peers regarding theology, living in the world and leadership.
The writings of Colin Gunton, Miroslav Volf and the lives of Viv’s fellow leaders in Operation Mobilisation
all played their part in shaping the ideas of Formation.
Two themes kept recurring – God as Trinity, and living a spectacular ordinary life in response to the world.
These have become the focus of Formation.
The message of Formation has been articulated around the world through Viv’s speaking, mentoring and writing
over the last ten years. In a more profound way the message of Formation is rooted in the story of the people of
God who have seen and are being developed in the image of the Father, Son and Spirit.
