Paper Boys - Introduction
Modern Western culture, rather like the Roman Empire at the time of
Jesus, offers many good things while being profoundly problematic for
true Christian faith. Evangelicalism, however, has often defined itself
in remarkably modern and Western terms: seeing faith as individualistic,
rational and goal-driven. As modernity now disintegrates into moral and
ethical chaos, where does that leave evangelicalism? Viv Thomas
suggests, with a generous spirit and a lightness of touch, that it
leaves evangelicalism forced back on to rich Christian traditions of
trinitarian spirituality. This invitation to join the dance will not -
should not - be easy reading, but it may just be a word of life at the
right time to those stranded in the 'thin and brittle' wasteland of the
modern world.
