Foundation for Christian Ministry
Talk notes by Viv Thomas
Based on John 13 1-17
Before Jesus goes to the cross, teaches the disciples, and washes their feet, we
discover the shape of his internal world. That internal world was hugely influential
on how he led. What was it like and what are the implications?
1) Jesus knew his Father
Christian leadership is at its essence relational
- Jesus is constantly referring to and talking with his Father
- The authority of Jesus is from his Father
2) Jesus knew his History
Leaders need to have a grasp of personal history
- Nazareth is ignored
- Roots are in his Father
- We are participants in a new history
3) Jesus knew his Future
Leaders need to perceive their future
- The immediate future of Jesus is ignored
- Future is seen in context of Father
- Perceptions of future shape the life of faith
Implications for leadership
- Action: movement to take initiative
- Tough: ability to deal with conflict
- Investment: Focus on people’s future
- Generosity: energy to keep on giving
All of this takes place in chaotic conditions. The backdrop is one of betrayal.
